The Apple's Best Ballaz
Sundiata "Yata" Gaines 6'1 G Molloy

Written By Keith Mason

Enjoyed a very successful first year on varsity at Molloy. He helped lead the team to a #6 rankings at one point in the USA Today poll. He was the team's 3rd leading scorer despite being the 6th man. Yata plays a very strong game, most of his points come inside the paint. He uses his strength and quickness to get to the basket, and when he gets to the basket his strength allows him to shield off defenders and either get the two or get to the line. He often struggles from the line, but with time that should improve. He has begun to develop a reliable jump shot which can be streaky at times. He is also a very tough defender when he puts his mind to it, because he has good footwork which allows him to keep players in front of him. His strength also helps him defense because it is not easy just to move him out the way and clear space for a shot. On the high school level he will be unguardable, because he will be stronger then whoever guards him. On the next level in order for him to be a great player he will have to work on his point guard skills. Which he should be able to do this summer, considering the Gauchos look like they will be without Ronald Ramon this year. He and Russell Robinson will probably split time at the point which in the end will help both players reach their full potential. Watch out for big things from Yata this summer, he will make a name for himself at the Nike camp or whatever other camps he attends.
